What Age Should a Child Start Talking? Speech Milestones by Age

Six speech stages — tap a card to read the details6 of 6 shown

A child’s first word appears at about 12 months on average — that is the anchor for the whole speech timeline. Everything before it is rehearsal (cooing at 0–3 months, babbling at 4–8), and everything after it compounds fast: word pairs at 18–24 months, 3–5 word sentences by 3, and clear, stranger-ready storytelling by 4. This guide walks each stage with the vocabulary counts that go with it, then covers the two questions parents ask most: what “talking clearly” really means at each age, and how growing up with two languages changes — and does not change — the timeline.

About this guide. It describes typical speech development only — the patterns seen across large groups of children. It is educational background, not a screening tool, and it deliberately does not cover evaluation or therapy topics; those belong with your pediatrician or a speech-language professional.

1. The Six Stages, Explained

Each card above anchors to a full breakdown below. Together they form the complete typical timeline from birth to age four.

First Sounds

Cooing · 0–3 mo

Soft vowel sounds — 'aaa', 'ooo', 'aah-goo' — usually deployed at faces, especially after a feed or during a chat.

Sounds you hear: Vowel-heavy, gentle, no consonants yet
Word count: Pre-words: sound as interaction, not labels
Speech Practice

Babbling · 4–8 mo

Consonant-vowel chains — 'baba', 'mama', 'dada' — repeated in long runs. Around 7–10 months these start sounding intentional.

Sounds you hear: ba, ma, da, ga chains; rising melody by 8–10 mo
Word count: Pre-words: the mouth rehearsing its instrument
The Milestone

First word · 10–15 mo

A consistent sound attached to a consistent meaning — 'mama' for mom, 'ba' for bottle, 'dog' for the family dog. The classic average is right around the first birthday.

Sounds you hear: One real word, often a simplified adult form
Word count: 1–5 words, growing a few per month
Grammar Begins

Word combinations · 18–24 mo

Two-word telegraph sentences — 'more juice', 'daddy go', 'doggy big' — appearing once vocabulary passes roughly 50 words.

Sounds you hear: Fuller word shapes; consonants at word ends appear
Word count: 18 mo: ~20–50 words · 24 mo: ~100–300 words
The Explosion

Short sentences · 2–3 yrs

Three-to-five-word sentences with little grammar words arriving — 'I want that one', 'where daddy go?'. New words appear daily, sometimes several per day.

Sounds you hear: Strangers understand roughly half at 2, most by 3
Word count: By age 3: commonly 500–1,000 words in use
Conversation

Clear storytelling · 3–4+ yrs

True narratives — a day at preschool retold with a beginning and ending, jokes told on purpose, endless 'why'. Speech is now fully two-way.

Sounds you hear: Strangers understand nearly everything at 4
Word count: Thousands of words; grammar largely in place

The single most useful lens on this grid: each stage is a system, not a count. Cooing is turn-taking practice; babbling is motor rehearsal; gestures at 9–12 months are pre-sentence structure; word pairs are grammar’s first draft. Children who “talk early” and children who “talk late” usually differ by weeks on each system — the sequence itself is remarkably stable across children and across languages.

2. Vocabulary Size by Age: The Numbers Behind “How Many Words?”

Word counts are the most-quoted and most-misread numbers in child development. Two warnings before the table: toddlers understand many times more words than they say, and nobody can count a toddler’s vocabulary precisely — parents, pediatricians, and researchers all sample. With that understood, here are the commonly cited production ranges:

AgeWords spokenSentence styleUnderstanding
12 months1–5 wordsNone — single words onlySimple requests; own name; 'no'
18 months~20–50 wordsSingle words; first pairs may appearOne-step directions ('bring the ball')
24 months~100–300 words2-word phrases ('more milk')Two-step directions; simple questions
3 years~500–1,000 words3–5 word sentences with pronounsMost everyday conversation at home
4 years1,500–2,500+ wordsFull sentences, tells stories, asks 'why'Nearly everything said to them

So: by age 3, the child’s vocabulary typically consists of roughly 500–1,000 spoken words — now including colors, positions, pronouns, and question words — deployed in 3–5 word sentences. The 18-to-24-month stretch is where the famous “vocabulary explosion” lives: many children add a word a day or more, and the jump from ~50 to ~200 words between those birthdays is one of the fastest learning curves in a human lifetime.

⚠️ Read ranges, not points. Two healthy 24-month-olds can sit at 80 words and 300 words respectively. The ranges overlap so heavily that any single number is noise; whether new words are appearing month over month is the signal worth watching.

3. First Words: When They Arrive and What Counts

What counts as a first word is narrower than proud relatives assume, and wider than anxious parents fear. The test has two prongs — a consistent sound form and a consistent meaning:

  • Counts: “mama” aimed only at mom; “ba” used for every request involving the bottle; an animal sound (“woof”) used for the dog; a made-up but stable label the family adopts.
  • Doesn’t count (yet): one-off imitations, sounds produced while babbling with no target, and words sung in songs without meaning attached.
  • Underrated bridge: pointing plus vocalizing at 9–12 months. A baby who points at a plane and vocalizes is mid-sentence in the only grammar they have.

Timing, from the large-sample literature: about half of children produce a true first word by their first birthday, the large majority by 15 months, and the typical window is quoted as 10–15 months. First words cluster around the people and objects that dominate the child’s day — names for parents, pets, food, and the words for “more” and “gone”. Expressive variation between children at 15 months is enormous and largely meaningless; a quiet first-worder who suddenly strings pairs at 20 months has simply compressed the schedule.

💡 Tip: narration works. The most reliably recommended home practice across the field is self-talk and parallel talk — narrate what you are doing and what the child is doing, in short simple sentences, all day. No flashcards: the words that stick are the ones attached to what the child is already watching.

4. “Talking Clearly”: The Intelligibility Ladder

What age should a child start talking clearly? Clarity is its own milestone with its own schedule, and the key variable is who is listening. Parents are expert decoders with full context; strangers are not. The commonly used ladder:

  • Age 2: parents understand most; strangers catch roughly 50%.
  • Age 3: strangers understand most of it — around 75% — though multi-syllable words still compress (“psghetti”).
  • Age 4: strangers understand nearly everything, and the child self-corrects when misunderstood.
  • Ages 5–7: the late-maturing sounds — /r/, /th/, /l/ blends — finish settling; some substitutions remain fully typical into early school years.

The pattern behind the ladder is that clarity trails vocabulary: the child’s ideas outpace their articulator control for years. That is why a 2-year-old can say a 4-word sentence nobody but family can parse, and why “they talk clearly” resolves into two separate questions — is the language rich (words, sentences), and is the pronunciation maturing (sounds)? They run on different clocks, and both clocks have wide normal bands.

5. Growing Up With Two Languages: What Changes (and What Doesn’t)

Bilingual development is the most common source of milestone confusion in multilingual families, so here are the four facts that settle it:

  • The timetable holds. First words and first word-pairs in bilingual children land in the same typical windows as monolingual children — bilingualism does not slow speech down.
  • Count both languages together. A toddler with 25 words in each of two languages has 50 words. Judged against a single-language table either count alone looks small; the total is the meaningful number.
  • Mixing is normal engineering. Sentences that borrow from both languages (“quiero juice”) show the child is using every word they own. It fades as each vocabulary grows.
  • Comprehension runs ahead in the community language. A child may understand daycare English well while producing the home language first — production follows emotional frequency.

None of this changes the practical advice: consistent, warm exposure to each language — ideally from people, not screens — is the whole mechanism. Language milestones sit on top of the broader developmental arc covered in child development stages by age, and they feed directly into later skills: the reading milestones timeline and the alphabet and numbers guide both pick up where speech leaves off.

6. FAQ: When Children Start Talking

A child's first real word — a consistent sound with a consistent meaning — appears at about 12 months on average, with the typical window running 10 to 15 months. Before that, talking is already under construction: cooing in the first three months, consonant babbling from 4–8 months, and gesture-plus-sound combinations around 9–12 months. 'Talking' in the sense of actual word use is a first-birthday milestone for about half of children, and a 15–18 month milestone for most of the rest.

Keep Exploring the Milestone Series

Speech is the foundation layer: the reading milestones guide shows how spoken language becomes decoding, and the alphabet guide covers the letters and numbers that get attached to it. For toddler-life logistics, the potty training age guide and the self-care skills by age cover independence skills; the stages-by-age hub puts all of it in one 0–18 map.
