Child Height Predictor Calculator — 4 Adult Height Methods
⚠ Educational growth-math tool — not a medical prediction
Every method below comes from published growth research, but all four produce ranges, not certainties. This tool is for curiosity, planning, and understanding the math. It does not diagnose growth disorders and does not replace your pediatrician's growth chart — if your child's growth concerns you, that conversation belongs in a clinic.
Recommended method for these inputs: Bayley-Pinneau. Ages 4–12: the Bayley-Pinneau peak window (±2 in). Cross-check against the mid-parental target when parents are known.
Method bands are illustrative 95% intervals from published growth research: B-P ±2 in (4–12 y), K-R ±2.6 in, MPH ±3.5 in (~90% of children), doubling ±3 in. Only know the parents' heights? Use the parents-only predictor.
The 4 Child Height Prediction Methods at a Glance
Every serious answer to "how tall will my child be" runs on one of four formulas. They are not interchangeable — each has its own accuracy band, its own best age window, and its own data requirements. The matrix below is the trade-off table the dashboard above scores against: pick the row that matches your child's age and the data you actually have, and distrust any website that hides which formula it is using.
| Method | Accuracy (95% band) | Best age window | Data required |
|---|---|---|---|
Bayley-Pinneau (chronological)Recommended Divides current height by the fraction of adult height already attained. The closest thing to a gold standard you can run at home. | ±2.0 in (±5.1 cm) R² ≈ 0.90 | 4–12 years (best) | Sex, current height, exact age |
Khamis-Roche (simplified)High Accuracy Blends the child's current-size trajectory with mid-parental genetics. The clinical version adds weight tables; our simplified version blends 55/45. | ±2.6 in (±6.6 cm) R² ≈ 0.93 (clinical tables) | 4–16 years | Sex, height, age + both parents' heights (weight optional) |
Mid-parental height (MPH)Pre-Birth OK Boy = (mom + dad + 5 in) / 2 · Girl = (mom + dad − 5 in) / 2. Works on day one, but the ±3.5 in target range covers roughly 90% of children, not all. | ±3.5 in (±8.9 cm) R² ≈ 0.55 (child not needed) | Any age — even before birth | Mother's + father's height only |
Age-2 doubling ruleFor Entertainment Double the height at the anchor age. A 19th-century heuristic — fun, memorable, and the least accurate of the four. | ±3.0 in (±7.6 cm) R² ≈ 0.40 | Girls @ 18 mo · Boys @ 24 mo | One height measurement at the anchor age |
Bayley-Pinneau Multiplier Table — Age × Sex (2–17 Years)
The Bayley-Pinneau method rests on one empirical observation: a typically growing child sits on the same percentile channel for years, so the fraction of adult height already attained at a given age is remarkably stable. Multiply today's height by the table's multiplier (or divide by the attained fraction — same thing) and you have the projection. Hover or tap a row to highlight it; the 8-year-old boy's 1.37 multiplier says a 52-inch 8-year-old is tracking toward about 71 inches.
| Age | Boys — attained % | Boys — × multiplier | Girls — attained % | Girls — × multiplier |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2 y | 50% | 2.000 | 52% | 1.923 |

When Can You Predict a Child's Height? The Timing Matrix
"At what age can you predict a child's adult height?" is really four questions, one per age window, because accuracy is not constant across childhood — it collapses at both ends. Under age 2, infant growth is catch-up-or-catch-down noise and no child-based formula is defensible. From 4 to 12, growth runs on rails. After 12, puberty timing re-introduces variance that only a bone-age X-ray can pin down.
| Age window | Reliable methods | Typical error | What moves it |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0–2 years | Mid-parental height only | ±3.5 in band; no child-based method is defensible | Length measurements under 24 months are lying-down and noisy; the Bayley-Pinneau chronological tables do not open until age 2. |
| 2–4 years | Doubling rule (girls from 18 mo, boys at 24 mo); B-P opens at 2 y with wide error | ±3 in (doubling) · ±3–4 in (early B-P) | Catch-up and catch-down growth after infancy makes this the second-least reliable window. |
| 4–12 years | Bayley-Pinneau (recommended) + Khamis-Roche | ±2 in (B-P) · ±2.6 in (K-R simplified) | The peak accuracy window: pre-pubertal growth runs on a stable percentile channel, so current size extrapolates cleanly. |
| 12–16 years | Khamis-Roche or bone-age-corrected B-P | ±2.6–4 in depending on puberty timing | Puberty timing shifts predictions by up to 2 in either way. A Greulich-Pyle bone-age X-ray restores most of the lost accuracy. |
How Accurate Are Child Height Predictors, Really?
Ask "are child height predictors accurate?" and the honest answer is a ranked list, not a yes-or-no. Each method below shows its correlation strength (R²) and the 95% interval width that follows from it — the bars are directly comparable, which is exactly the comparison most predictor websites refuse to make.
Greulich-Pyle skeletal age corrects for puberty timing. Needs a hand/wrist radiograph.
Height + weight + parents, no X-ray. The best non-clinical benchmark.
Best home method in the 4–12 window; assumes typical puberty timing.
R² is low because it ignores the child entirely — yet its ±3.5 in range still covers ~90% of outcomes.
One measurement, zero nuance. A heuristic, and it behaves like one.
Why do two online calculators disagree on the same child? Five ordinary reasons, in order of how much they matter:
- Different multiplier vintages. Bayley-Pinneau tables were published from 1952 to 1959 on American children of that era; Khamis-Roche arrived in 1994; CDC reference updates have shifted the 50th percentile since. A "1959 boy" and a "today boy" at the same height carry different fractions.
- Sex adjustment in mid-parental math. Some sites use (mom + dad) / 2 for both sexes; the standard adds 5 in for boys and subtracts 5 in for girls. That single choice moves the target by 2.5 in.
- Unit rounding. A height keyed in as 4′5″ embeds up to 0.24 in of rounding before the formula even runs; keyed as 135.3 cm it does not.
- Bone age inclusion. Clinical predictors correct for skeletal maturity; online ones cannot, so after age 12 they drift with puberty timing.
- Reference source. WHO standards (0–5 y, based on breastfed cohorts) and CDC charts (national sample) disagree by up to half a percentile channel, which propagates into any percentile-derived multiplier.
💡 First-principles: what a bone-age X-ray adds
A Greulich-Pyle bone-age reading looks at growth plates in a hand/wrist radiograph and states how "old" the skeleton is. An 11-year-old with a 13-year-old bone age is not the same prediction problem as an 11-year-old with a 10-year-old bone age — same height, same chronological age, up to 2 in of difference in where they finish. That is the entire accuracy gap between the clinical method (R² ≈ 0.98) and every home method.
Six Milestone Checkpoints — Which Method at Which Visit
The practical question is never "which method exists" but "which method is worth running at the appointment we are actually standing in." These six cards map the well-child schedule to the right tool, with the honest error bar for each.
At 9 months a baby has completed roughly 46% (boys) to 48% (girls) of adult height, but individual timing is so variable that dividing height by a fraction is meaningless. Record length, plot the percentile, and lean on the mid-parental range.
The classic checkpoint: boys double their 24-month height, girls their 18-month height. Standing measurement replaces lying-down length here, which is exactly why the doubling rule is anchored at these two ages.
From age 4 the chronological B-P multiplier settles to a ±2 in band for typically growing children. If you want one number with an honest error bar, this is the earliest age to take it seriously.
Mid-childhood is the calmest growth phase: 2–2.5 in per year, on-channel, no hormonal noise. Both child-based methods hit their best accuracy here, and the two methods usually agree within an inch.
Girls average the start of their growth spurt around 10–11, boys around 12–13. An early maturer at the 12-year checkup may already be 80% done; a late maturer only 75%. Use the puberty slider and expect wider bands.
By 15, girls are typically ≥97% of adult height and boys ≥93%. The remaining question is mostly 'when do the growth plates close', which is exactly what a Greulich-Pyle bone-age X-ray answers.
Celebrity Case Bank — One Child Through All 4 Methods
Nothing exposes the gap between "a prediction" and "the prediction" like running the same family through all four formulas. Parent heights below are as publicly reported; child current heights are clearly-labeled assumptions for illustration, because measuring real children for a website is exactly the kind of thing this tool is not for.
Blue Ivy Carter
Girl · Beyoncé 67 in (170 cm) + Jay-Z 75 in (190.5 cm)MPH and the current-size methods disagree by 3 in here. When a tall father and average mother combine, the mid-parental formula assumes the child tracks the family mean — only years of actual growth data can arbitrate.
Shiloh Jolie-Pitt
Girl · Angelina Jolie 67 in (170 cm) + Brad Pitt 71 in (180.3 cm)The teaching case for timing: past ~16 for girls and ~18 for boys the growth plates have fused and prediction becomes measurement. Any calculator still 'predicting' an adult's height is a party trick.
Prince George of Wales
Boy · Catherine 68 in (172.7 cm) + William 75 in (190.5 cm)Three methods, three answers — 70.6, 72.2, 74 in — all inside the honest ±2–3.5 in bands. This is exactly why every serious answer to 'how tall will he be' is a range, not a number.
How to Use This Child Height Predictor Calculator Correctly
The dashboard is deliberately constraint-first: it asks what you know, then tells you which method deserves the most weight. Three habits make the output materially better than a random website's single-number answer. First, measure barefoot against a hard floor and wall, heels touching, morning if possible — children measure up to 0.4 in taller in the evening after spinal decompression resets overnight. Second, enter the exact age in years and months, because the attained-fraction table steps in whole years and a child 11 months from their birthday gets a materially different multiplier than the rounded age suggests. Third, when both parents' heights are known, leave that checkbox on — the Khamis-Roche blend it unlocks is the only home method that uses both the child's trajectory and the family ceiling.
Reading the output is the part most sites skip. The four cards never fully agree, and they should not: the Bayley-Pinneau card extrapolates one percentile channel, the mid-parental card projects a family mean, and the doubling card doubles a single snapshot. When the recommended method and the mid-parental target land within an inch of each other, that convergence is itself information — two independent data paths agreeing. When they diverge by 3 in or more, the causes are usually measurable: puberty timing (use the slider), a measurement taken in the evening, or a child crossing percentile channels, which is the one signal that belongs in a pediatric conversation rather than a calculator.
💡 Best scenario
Child aged 4–12, measured barefoot in the morning, both parents' heights entered. The recommended Bayley-Pinneau card and the mid-parental card should agree within ~2 in.
⚠️ Warning
Do not re-run the calculator weekly. Height moves ~0.2 in per month at most; the prediction band is inches wide. Re-run at well-child visits, not on a homework deadline.
❌ Don't
Don't treat a doubling-rule number for a growth-restricted toddler, an early-maturing tween, or a child mid-illness as a forecast — every heuristic fails widest exactly there.
Prediction vs Percentile: How This Differs From the Height-by-Age Calculator
The child height calculator by age is percentile-first: it answers "where does my child sit against same-age peers right now, and is the channel stable?" This page is prediction-first: it answers "where does the channel end?" Use the percentile tool to verify the input this page depends on — a child who is crossing channels downward is exactly the child whose prediction deserves a professional reading of the growth chart, not a bigger multiplier table.
