Conception Date Calculator — Reverse Due Date & Conception Day Finder
Conception → birth = 266 days
From fertilization to the estimated due date is exactly 38 weeks = 266 days. Every mode on this page is this single constant applied forward or backward.
LMP convention adds 14 days
Obstetric dating counts from the last period, not ovulation: 280 − 266 = 14 days. That is why Naegele's rule says EDD = LMP + 280 days.
Fertile window = 6 days
Sperm survive up to 5 days, the egg about 24 hours. So the reverse answer is a ±3-day window — a single "conception day" is false precision.
Three-Mode Conception Date Calculator
Choose the direction you need. Every result is derived from the 266-day constant and printed in the step trace below — for planning and date arithmetic only, always follow your OB/GYN or midwife for clinical decisions.
Educational date math only. This page performs calendar arithmetic — it does not assess a pregnancy, predict outcomes, or replace clinical dating. Only ~4% of babies arrive on their exact due date and ~80% arrive between 37 and 42 weeks. For anything clinical, follow your OB/GYN or midwife.
Reverse Calculation Math — Birthday − 266 Days
The whole reverse calculator rests on one axiom: from conception to the estimated due date is exactly 266 days (38 weeks). Run the subtraction backward and the birthday surrenders the conception window. Worked example, step by step:
- Anchor: baby born Saturday, March 11, 2029.
- Subtract the constant: March 11 − 266 days. Walking back through the calendar: March 11 → February (28 days) → January (59) → December (90) → November (120) → October (151) → September (181) → August (212) → July (243) → June 18 (266). The center lands on June 18, 2028.
- Apply the fertile-window lemma: sperm survive up to 5 days and the egg about 24 hours, so the honest answer is the six-day window June 15–21, 2028, centered on June 18.
- Cross-check with the LMP convention: March 11 − 280 days = June 4, 2028; June 4 + 14 = June 18. Both routes agree — the arithmetic is internally consistent because 280 = 266 + 14.
Why a window and not a day? Because two biological clocks are involved. The sperm's up-to-5-day survival means intercourse on June 13 can still fertilize an egg ovulated June 18; the egg's ~24-hour lifespan means ovulation on June 19 closes the window on the other side. A reverse calculator that outputs a single date is discarding this boundary condition — the ±3-day spread is the correct answer to "calculate when my child was conceived."
Three Ways to Estimate a Conception Date — Method Matrix
The three estimation routes differ in what they anchor on: a remembered period, a measured embryo, or an observed ovulation. Accuracy, best window, and data requirements are not interchangeable — the matrix makes the trade-offs explicit.
| Method | Accuracy | Best time window | Data needs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Most Common Naegele reverse (LMP-based) Assumes a 28-day cycle with ovulation on day 14. The default method for most apps and clinics when nothing better is available. | ±5–7 days | Works at any point in pregnancy | First day of the last period |
| Most Accurate First-trimester ultrasound (CRL) Measures the embryo itself, so cycle length stops mattering. This is the method clinics use to re-set a due date. | ±3–5 days | Best measured at 7–13 weeks | Crown-rump length from a dating scan |
| Personal Best Ovulation tracking reverse (OPK/BBT) For the individual who tracked, this beats everything except IVF — it pins the actual ovulation day rather than assuming day 14. | ±1–3 days | Only if you tracked the cycle | LH test result or BBT shift date |
Note the ordering: the "most common" method (Naegele reverse) is the least accurate of the three, because it assumes a textbook 28-day cycle. If a first-trimester scan exists, it outranks everything — which is exactly why clinics re-set due dates after a dating ultrasound instead of defending the LMP version.
IVF and Assisted Reproduction — Transfer-Day Formulas
Assisted reproduction removes the biggest error source — nobody has to guess ovulation, because the lab observed it. The conception-equivalent event becomes the egg retrieval (day 0), and the transfer simply shifts the anchor by the embryo's lab age. Five cases, five formulas:
| Case | Formula | Why it works | Worked example |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fresh transfer · Day-5 blastocyst | EDD = transfer date + 261 days | 266 days of gestation minus 5 days the embryo already grew in the lab. | Transfer Nov 1, 2025 → EDD = Nov 1 + 261 d = Jul 20, 2026 |
| Fresh transfer · Day-3 cleavage | EDD = transfer date + 263 days | 266 − 3 = 263. A day-3 embryo is two days 'younger' than a blastocyst on the same calendar day. | Transfer Mar 3, 2026 → EDD = Mar 3 + 263 d = Nov 21, 2026 |
| Frozen embryo transfer (FET) | EDD = thaw & transfer date + 261 d (D5) or + 263 d (D3) | Frozen storage time does not count — the gestational clock restarts at thawing, using the same embryo-age offsets as fresh. | FET of a D5 embryo on Jan 9, 2026 → EDD = Jan 9 + 261 d = Sep 27, 2026 |
| Donor egg / donor embryo | EDD = egg retrieval date + 266 d (or transfer + 261 d for a D5 embryo) | Dating follows the egg, not the carrier. The recipient's cycle and age are irrelevant to the arithmetic. | Donor retrieval Jun 10, 2026 → EDD = Jun 10 + 266 d = Mar 3, 2027 |
| ICSI | EDD = egg retrieval + 266 d — identical to conventional IVF | ICSI changes how fertilization is performed (single sperm injected), not when. Day 0 is still the retrieval day. | Retrieval Apr 22, 2026, ICSI, D5 transfer Apr 27 → EDD = Apr 22 + 266 d = Jan 13, 2027 |
Fresh transfer: why Day 3 and Day 5 embryos differ by exactly 2 days
A day-5 blastocyst has already spent 5 of its 266 gestational days growing in a dish, so the calendar owes it 5 fewer days: EDD = transfer + 261. A day-3 cleavage-stage embryo has spent 3, so EDD = transfer + 263. The two-day gap between the formulas is not a rounding choice — it is the literal embryo-age difference transferred into calendar arithmetic.
Frozen, donor, and surrogate cases
Frozen embryo transfers keep the same offsets — freezing pauses development but does not age the embryo, so the thaw/transfer date restarts the clock. Donor-egg pregnancies date from the donor's retrieval: the carrying parent's cycle contributes nothing to the arithmetic. Gestational-carrier pregnancies work identically. In every assisted case the answer is a single date with roughly ±1 day of true uncertainty — the tightest dating that exists.
Pregnancy State Machine — From Conception Day 0 to 40 Weeks
Gestational age and conception-day count describe the same pregnancy in two coordinate systems, offset by the 14-day LMP convention: GA = conception day + 14. This matrix maps the states in both systems, so any milestone expressed in weeks can be converted to days from conception — and back.
| State | Gestational age | Conception-day equivalent | What defines it |
|---|---|---|---|
| AxiomS0 · Conception | 2w0d | day 0 | Fertilization — sperm meets egg in the fallopian tube. The one-day event every reverse calculation tries to locate. |
| S1 · Implantation | 3w0d–3w5d | days 6–12 | Blastocyst embeds in the uterine lining; hCG production begins. Home tests become possible ~2 weeks later. |
| S2 · Embryonic period | 4w–10w | days 16–56 | Organs form. A first-trimester dating scan in this window is the most accurate non-IVF measurement (±3–5 d). |
| LemmaS3 · Fetus | 10w0d | day 56 | The embryo is reclassified as a fetus. Risk of major structural anomalies drops sharply from here. |
| S4 · End of first trimester | 13w6d | day 83 | Trimester 1 closes. Miscarriage risk falls substantially; the 12-week NT scan window ends. |
| ThresholdS5 · Anatomy scan | 20w0d | day 126 | The mid-pregnancy ultrasound — structural survey and, in many countries, the halfway marker. |
| ThresholdS6 · Viability | 24w0d | day 154 | The statistical threshold where survival outside the womb becomes possible with intensive neonatal care. |
| ThresholdS7 · Early term | 37w0d | day 245 | Births from this week are 'early term' — generally safe, though 39w remains the preferred target. |
| S8 · Full term | 39w0d | day 259 | The American College of Obstetricians' recommended birth window opens (39w0d–40w6d). |
| AxiomS9 · Estimated due date | 40w0d | day 266 | The EDD itself — a midpoint estimate, not a deadline. Only ~4% of babies arrive on this exact date. |
| S10 · Late / post term | 41w–42w | days 273–280 | Monitoring intensifies; most providers recommend induction by 41–42 weeks. |
The conversion works in both directions and explains the calculator's outputs: the anatomy scan at 20w0d is conception day 126, viability at 24w0d is day 154, and the EDD at 40w0d is day 266 — the same axiom that started this page, returning in a different coordinate system.
Vertical Timeline — What Happens at Each Gestational Week
The same state machine rendered as a timeline, with gestational weeks on the left and their conception-day equivalents in the middle.
Read the timeline as a countdown anchored at day 0: everything above is derived by adding the fixed offsets, which is why the calculator can print milestone dates from a single input date.

Clinic-AnchoredDate worked example — the conception date of a child born December 25
A Christmas Day baby gives a clean reverse calculation because the answer lands in the same calendar year. Take a baby born Thursday, December 25, 2025 and walk the 266-day constant backward:
birthday = Thu, Dec 25, 2025
walk back = Nov 30 (25) · Oct 31 (55) · Sep 30 (86) · Aug 31 (116)
Jul 31 (147) · Jun 30 (178) · May 31 (208) · Apr 30 (239)
conception_center = Apr 3, 2025 (day 266)
fertile_window = Mar 31 – Apr 6, 2025 (±3 days)
estimated_lmp = Mar 20, 2025 (Dec 25 − 280 d; Mar 20 + 14 = Apr 3 ✓)So the conception date of a child born December 25 is most likely around April 3 of that same year, with a realistic six-day fertile window of March 31 – April 6. If intercourse is known to have happened outside that window, remember sperm can predate ovulation by up to 5 days; a first-trimester ultrasound (±3–5 days) still outranks the calendar math.
Conception-Date Traps — Tip, Warning & Don't Cards
Sperm survive up to 5 days in the reproductive tract, so the conception date can be up to 5 days after the intercourse date — never before it. The ±3-day window in reverse mode exists precisely because of this gap.
Only ~4% of babies arrive on their estimated due date; about 80% arrive between weeks 37 and 42. Plan around the two-week window, and let your OB/GYN — not a calculator — call the clinical shots.
A single "conception date" implies ±0-day precision that the biology does not support. Record the six-day window; if a first-trimester scan exists, let that measurement tighten it.
Conception Date Calculator — FAQ
A child born on March 11th was conceived when?
Subtract 266 days: the most likely conception date is June 18 of the previous year, with a realistic window of June 15–21. The counting is exact — June 18 → March 11 spans 266 days — and the ±3-day spread reflects sperm survival (up to 5 days) plus the egg's ~24-hour lifespan. The reverse mode at the top of this page runs the same subtraction for any birthday.
If my child was conceived today, when is the birthday?
Add 266 days to today. The birthday of a child conceived today lands 38 weeks later — that is the estimated due date in forward mode. Switch the calculator to mode ② with today's date in the conception field to see the full output: due date, gestational age, trimester, and the 20/24/37/39/40-week milestone countdowns.
When will my child be born if I conceive today?
Today + 266 days is the center of the estimate. About 4% of babies arrive exactly on their due date and roughly 80% arrive between 37 and 42 weeks, so the practical answer is 'the date the calculator prints, give or take two weeks'.
How do I calculate when my child was conceived?
Birthday − 266 days = most likely conception day; widen it by ±3 days for the honest window. Example: born March 11 → conceived around June 18 the previous year (window June 15–21). If a first-trimester ultrasound was done, its dating (±3–5 days) outranks the calendar arithmetic.
Is the conception date the same as the day of intercourse?
No. Fertilization happens at ovulation, and sperm can wait in the reproductive tract for up to 5 days. The intercourse date is therefore an upper bound on when intercourse happened but a lower bound on conception: conception = intercourse date or later, never earlier. This asymmetry is the single most common source of confusion in reverse calculations.
Do twins share the same conception date?
Yes, for practical purposes. Identical twins split from one fertilized egg, and fraternal twins come from eggs released in the same ovulation window — typically within 24 hours of each other — so both share one conception date and one due date. The dating math on this page needs no adjustment for twins; only the delivery timing tends to differ (twins more often arrive before 37 weeks).
Why does my ultrasound date differ from my LMP date?
LMP dating assumes a 28-day cycle with day-14 ovulation; real cycles run 21–35 days or more. A first-trimester ultrasound measures the embryo's crown-rump length directly, bypassing the cycle assumption. Standard practice: if the scan differs from the LMP estimate by more than 7 days before 14 weeks (more than 10 days later on), the due date is re-set to the scan value.
What if I can't remember my last period?
Don't guess — a recalled LMP can import a ±2-week error, worse than any method it replaces. Use mode ② (Conception → Due Date) if ovulation was tracked or conception is otherwise known, or use the first-trimester dating ultrasound, which is accurate to ±3–5 days without any cycle memory at all.
How accurate is reverse calculation at 20 weeks versus 30 weeks?
Accuracy degrades as pregnancy progresses because babies' size trajectories diverge: first-trimester scans are ±3–5 days; around 20 weeks the estimate widens to roughly ±7–10 days; by 30 weeks it can be ±21 days or more. This is why the due date is anchored at the earliest good scan and not re-dated from late-pregnancy measurements.
What does a child's conception date actually mean?
It means the estimated calendar day on which fertilization most likely occurred — sperm meeting the released egg in the fallopian tube, around ovulation. It is not the due date: the EDD is conception plus 266 days (38 weeks), the statistical finish line only ~4% of babies land on exactly. It is also different from gestational age, which is counted from the first day of the last period and therefore runs about two weeks ahead of conception age — '6 weeks pregnant' means only roughly 4 weeks past conception. And it is a reconstructed center of a ±3-day window (sperm up to 5 days, egg about 24 hours), not a logged event; without tracked ovulation or assisted conception, the exact day is unknowable.
One Constant, Three Directions
Every question this page answers — reverse a birthday, forward a conception date, apply Naegele's rule — reduces to the same 266-day axiom plus the 14-day LMP lemma and the 6-day fertile-window threshold. Run the three-mode calculator with your real dates, read the step trace to see which offsets moved, and record the window rather than a false-precision single day.
