Child T-Shirt Size Chart by Age: Clothing Size Guide
Youth cut: often labeled 6 or 6X for girls' lines
Next size up is 7 (47–50 in) — useful if a growth spurt is underway.
A child size chart by age is the fastest way to convert a birthday into a t-shirt size — 2T at 2, 4T at 4, size 10 at 10. But the age label is really a height label in disguise: it assumes a 50th-percentile child, so a child in the top quarter for height will blow through age-based sizes a full year early, and a child in the bottom quarter will swim in them. This guide gives you the full child t-shirt size chart by age (US sizes 2T–16 with height, chest, and waist), a height-first sizing calculator, and the spurt-timing rules that decide whether to buy one size or two.
1. Child T-Shirt Size Chart by Age (US 2T–16)
The chart below merges the toddler T-sizes with the youth numbering that follows them. If the child’s height lands inside the range, the size is correct regardless of where the birthday falls. Every dimension is in inches; garment chest is the finished shirt measurement, which already includes roughly 2 inches of wearing ease over body measurement.
| US size | Typical age | Height (in) | Chest (in) | Waist (in) | Cut notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2T Toddler | 2 yrs | 33–36 | 21 | 20 | Toddler cut: shorter torso, roomier seat, no side slits |
| 3T Toddler | 3 yrs | 36–39 | 22 | 21 | Toddler cut: still sized for diapers or pull-ups |
| 4T Toddler | 4 yrs | 39–42 | 23 | 22 | Toddler cut: last size before youth proportions begin |
| 5 Youth XS | 5 yrs | 42–45 | 24 | 23 | Youth cut starts: slimmer, longer body than 4T |
| 6 Youth XS | 6 yrs | 45–47 | 25 | 24 | Youth cut: often labeled 6 or 6X for girls' lines |
| 7 Youth S | 7 yrs | 47–50 | 26 | 24.5 | Narrowest stock gap in retail — many brands skip 7 and jump 6→8 |
| 8 Youth S | 8 yrs | 50–53 | 27 | 25 | Youth cut: first size where sleeve length matters for sports tees |
| 10 Youth M | 9–10 yrs | 53–56 | 28.5 | 26 | Youth cut: growth-spurt size — buy two if a spurt is underway |
| 12 Youth L | 11–12 yrs | 56–59 | 30 | 27.5 | Youth cut: last unisex size before adult S overtakes in length |
| 14 Youth XL | 13–14 yrs | 59–62 | 32 | 29 | Youth XL: shoulder width nearly equals adult S; hem is shorter |
| 16 Youth XXL | 15–16 yrs | 62–65 | 34 | 30.5 | Youth XXL: chest ≈ adult M, torso ≈ 2 in shorter |
💡 Practical tip. Measure height against a wall without shoes at the same time of day — children can measure up to 0.4 inch taller in the morning than in the evening, which is enough to flip a between-sizes decision.
⚠ Shrinkage warning. 100% cotton tees lose 3–5% of length on the first hot wash. If the chart says your child is exactly at a size’s maximum height, treat the shirt as one season long, not two.
❌ Don’t size up twice. Buying two sizes ahead produces a shirt that fits for about six weeks and then hangs wrong for two years. One size of room plus a hem that can be ignored beats a warehouse of unwearables.
2. Size by Height or Age? The Deviation Most Parents Miss
Age labels sit at the center of the height distribution, which means the age label and the actual best-fitting size disagree for about half of all children. The mismatch is not random: it follows the height percentile, and it compounds. If a child tracks the 75th percentile at age 3, an age-based pick of 3T overshoots by roughly one full size every two years — a 3-year-old at 39 inches needs 4T, a 5-year-old at 46 inches needs 7, and by age 8 an age-based buyer is two sizes behind reality.
- Within ±1 year of the label: age-based sizing fails for about 1 child in 4 — the cheapest mistakes to catch.
- More than 1 year off the label: the failure rate climbs past 50%, because the chart’s age bands assume median growth of about 2.5 inches per year between 2 and 10.
- During a measured spurt (2+ inches in 6 months): every cached “they wear size X” memory is void; re-measure before any clothing order.
- Height above the size range even after sizing up: switch to adult smalls once height passes ~62 in, since youth 16 stops at 65 in with a shorter torso.
If height is unknown and the child has no measurable chest yet, the age column remains a defensible estimate — but treat the result as a starting point with roughly a one-size error bar in either direction, and correct at the first fitting rather than re-ordering a full wardrobe.
3. Why 4T and Size 5 Fit Nothing Alike: Toddler vs Youth Cuts
The T-to-youth transition at age 4–5 is the one seam in the chart where numbers lie. A 4T and a youth 5 both claim to fit a 4-year-old, but they are different garments: 4T carries about an inch of extra seat room for pull-ups, a shorter torso, and a higher neck opening; size 5 slims the body, lengthens the sleeve, and drops the hem.
Toddler cut (2T–4T)
- Seat room sized for diapers or pull-ups
- Torso roughly 1 in shorter than youth at same height
- Snaps or wide neck openings for easy changes
- Best fit: children still in training pants
Youth cut (5–16)
- Slimmer body, straighter side seams
- Sleeve and hem length scale with height, not age
- Standard crew neck, no easy-change features
- Best fit: toilet-trained children with leaner builds
If a child in the 4T range is toilet-trained and lean, buying size 5 usually produces the better silhouette; if training is still underway, 4T’s extra seat room is worth more than a trimmer torso. When both cuts are on the rack, the height range — not the number — decides.
4. Growth Spurts: When the Chart Accelerates
From 2T through size 8, children gain height at a near-linear 2.5–3 inches per year, so the chart’s size bands advance at a steady one-size-per-year pace. Then the tempo changes. The mid-growth spurt (commonly 6–8 in girls, 9–11 in boys) can move a child 3–4 inches in a single year — two full chart sizes — and the adolescent spurt adds another 8–12 inches across two to three years before growth stops.
| Age band | Typical yearly gain | Chart sizes cleared / yr | Buying rule |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2–5 yrs | ~3 in (7.5 cm) | 1 size | Buy true size per season; hand-me-down pipeline works |
| 6–8 yrs (girls) / 9–11 (boys) | 3–4 in (7.5–10 cm) | 1.5–2 sizes | Buy the larger of two fitting sizes; skip stockpiling |
| Puberty peak | up to 4 in/yr for 2–3 yrs | 2+ sizes | Buy per 6 months; switch to adult smalls near 62 in |
💡 Spurt detector. Two marks on the door frame six months apart tell you more than any chart: if the gap is 1.5 inches or more, the child is in a spurt — size up immediately and expect the current size to be outgrown within the school year.
5. How to Measure Chest and Height Correctly
Two measurements settle 90% of t-shirt decisions. Do them wrong and even a perfect chart misfires, so it pays to spend the ninety seconds:
- Height: shoes off, heels and shoulders against a wall, eyes level. Mark the crown with a pencil and measure floor to mark. Record in inches to the quarter inch.
- Chest: tape under the arms, across the fullest part, child relaxed with arms down. Snug, not compressing. This is the body chest; the garment chart already adds ~2 inches of ease.
- Compare: body chest + 2 in of desired ease ≤ garment chest for a regular fit; add 3–4 in for an oversized fit.
If the tape says the body chest is 26 inches, a shirt cut to 27–28 inches fits with normal ease, and the size 7–8 band is the landing zone — even if the birthday says 6. Chest is the tiebreaker whenever height sits on a band boundary, and it is the only measurement that resolves slim versus broad builds of identical height.
6. Two Costly Mistakes This Chart Cannot Fix
Most sizing frustration traces back to two habits that no amount of chart-reading corrects:
Mistake 1: Sizing for “next year” every purchase
A size bought two steps ahead fits for a month and hangs wrong for the following 20. Across a 2T→10 wardrobe that habit wastes roughly a third of spend. Buy one size of room now; re-buy at the spurt marker.
Mistake 2: Ignoring the 7-size gap
Many brands jump 6→8 and skip size 7, because the 47–50 inch band sells out first. A child at 48 inches who rejects 6’s sleeves may find 8’s chest gaping — that is the one window where a slim-cut brand’s 7 or a size 8 with a chest-cinch is worth hunting for.
A third boundary matters at the top of the chart: once height crosses about 62 inches, youth 14–16 becomes a length compromise, and adult smalls (nearly identical chest, 1–2 inches longer body) fit better per dollar. The chart’s job ends there.
7. Child Size Chart by Age — FAQ
The questions below cover the edge cases parents ask most, from the 2T boundary to the youth-to-adult switch.
The typical mapping is: 2T at age 2, 3T at age 3, 4T at age 4, size 5–6 at ages 5–6, size 7–8 at ages 7–8, size 10–12 at ages 9–12, and size 14–16 at ages 13–16. Age labels assume 50th-percentile height, so a child above or below the 50th percentile for height should be sized by height instead — that single switch fixes most sizing misses.
